The New Jersey volleyball community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Nathan “Nate” Aguilar, a former New Jersey City University standout volleyball player and respected youth coach who died on June 24, 2026, at the age of 23 after sustaining injuries in a tragic accident.
His unexpected passing has left family members, friends, teammates, former coaches, and the Hudson County athletic community grieving the loss of a young leader whose passion for volleyball and commitment to mentoring others made a lasting impact.
A native of Kearny, New Jersey, Nate first gained recognition as an accomplished student-athlete at Kearny High School, where he helped lead the volleyball program to a league championship in 2021. His talent and work ethic earned him the opportunity to continue his athletic and academic career at New Jersey City University.
During his four seasons with the NJCU Gothic Knights from 2022 through 2025, Nate established himself as one of the team’s most dependable front-row players. Known for his athleticism, strong blocking ability, and efficient attacking, he contributed significantly to the program’s success while earning recognition as an NJAC Rookie of the Week early in his collegiate career. He also received academic honors for maintaining excellence in the classroom while competing at the collegiate level.
Nate graduated from New Jersey City University with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing. Beyond athletics, he gained valuable professional experience through marketing opportunities, including an internship with Tesla, demonstrating the same dedication and determination that characterized his athletic career.
After graduation, Nate devoted himself to developing the next generation of athletes as a head volleyball coach with PowerZone Volleyball. Players and fellow coaches remember him as an energetic mentor who emphasized teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and personal growth. His enthusiasm for teaching and his ability to encourage young athletes made him a respected figure throughout the local volleyball community.
Friends describe Nate as someone who naturally inspired those around him through his positivity, humility, and willingness to help others succeed. Whether on the court, in the classroom, or within his professional career, he consistently demonstrated leadership, respect, and a genuine commitment to those around him.
Following news of his passing, heartfelt tributes have poured in from teammates, coaches, volleyball organizations, and members of the New Jersey athletic community. Many have shared memories of his infectious energy, dedication to the sport, and the encouragement he offered to athletes of all ages.
Nate is survived by his parents, Pamela and Benjie Aguilar, his sisters, Rayshell and Brielle, along with many extended family members, friends, teammates, former classmates, and players whose lives he positively influenced.
Funeral and memorial service arrangements have not yet been publicly announced. The Aguilar family is expected to release additional information in the coming days.
