According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 11:05 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, on southbound Highway 101 near San Luis Bay Drive. Investigators said a 2020 Toyota Tacoma left the roadway for reasons still under investigation, overturned, and came to rest upside down in a traffic lane with its lights off. Moments later, a southbound 1991 BMW 535i collided with the overturned pickup. Gary Arias suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
